Thank you for yet another great post! Dialogue is always shut down by the anti-Israel crowd because, in my opinion, they don't want us to respond with factual information to counter their lies. But even more important to them is that their spokespeople don't want to be forced to answer our questions about what they want because an honest response would likely alienate any of their gullible followers who think they are supporting a social justice movement. Examples of questions that cause immediate shut down of discussion: 1. If anyone claiming Palestinian heritage were allowed to become an Israeli citizen on demand, which would inevitably mean a huge Muslim voter majority what would keep the Muslims from expelling (or killing) the Jews as has happened in many Muslim majority countries? 2. If the USA and all other countries stopped providing military aid to Israel wouldn't the billions invested in Hamas's and Hezbollah's by Muslim countries and groups make the destruction of Israel and the deaths of its 9 million citizens inevitable? 3. If the lives of children matter to you, why do you support what you claim are retaliatory attacks on Israeli children? 4. If you are not a Holocaust denier how can you explain your claim that the deaths of 60,000 Palestinians in Gaza (even if all of them were noncombatants and no one was fighting against Israel) is a genocide equivalent to or worse than they deaths of 6 million Jewish noncombatants? Since the only honest answer to any of these questions would be "Jewish lives don't matter," there can be no discussion.
I take Beinart at his word. He believes everything he says, and he's a highly educated man now teaching young people how to do journalism. What does this teach us? First of all, that education isn't what it's cracked up to be. Second, that ideology is a powerful force in Western culture, especially among those with a lot of education. It has taken over much of the media. This implies that something in Western culture is rotten, or if I want to put it in nicer sounding language, Western culture has been in decline, and the decline has accelerated. The evidence is everywhere throughout the culture: in education, in the arts, in the politics, in the religious institutions, in the media, in the entertainment. Everywhere.
The antisemitism is a part of the decadence of the culture. I know this is a depressing thought. Because this has a lot to do with so much that is central to a healthy civilization and probably with modernity itself, it is hard to see the way out of it. It will probably require a spiritual revolution, and that's a long term project that will have to start small, moving from individuals to small groups and then hopefully expanding outwards.

And btw, American military aid has been a bigger hindrance than a help for Israel, and the Israeli government is working on creating a domestic weapons manufacturing industry.

Beinart, having sold himself on the idea that if only Israel would dissolve itself back into Palestine, there'd be a secular, democratic binational state in its place, maybe four or five years ago, and find a comradery of sorts with Mr. Electronic Intifada, Ali Abunimah who was at that time known as an apologist for the Assad regime, we should neither be surprised by his stupidity in thinking he really had anything worthwhile to say to attendees at an event hosted at Tel Aviv University, where I'd hazard a guess that there's a significant Arab enrollment and, possibly faculty, nor his shock at being attacked, including by Mr. Electronic Intifada, as a faux antizionist.
