Lifelong Green or NDP Jewish Zionist here who will absafrickinlutely not be voting fro the Green s or NDO this time around (Reference Janica Atwin, even though she has left but she still sticks her name on antisemitic rhetoric like the “statements” the Greens put out last week (you can see them on EM’s facebook page) failed to unequivocally call out Jihadist Gazans and their fan base in Canada; never voted Conservative and can’t see that ever happening because exploiting legitimate Jewish concerns and pandering to us is using us for a value system that is antithetical to Tikkun Olam. Harper could have and should have been able to both criticize Israeli policies and support Israel by condemning the machinations behind and in front of Hamas and he could have addressed how their supporters were growing here. Trudeau Jr. referred to himself as a consist … the night before he left office. Thanks, but way too little too late. I am not against supporting the rebuilding of a peaceful Gaza with conditions of no Hamas or similar genocidal nihilists, constant monitoring of the monies, no weaponry, unequivocal recognition of Israel’s right to exist as the ancestral indigenous homeland of the Jewish Nation and that not a single rocket, bombing, terrorist act against Israel will be committed. This will also require, Israelis to vote out Netanyahu and the corrupt nutters of his government who are making things far more dangerous than they would have been or ever have been.
BTW did you notice after Carney’s election launch speech, neither the Greens nor the NDP dared to mention Israel. But we “Leftie” Zionist Canadians won’t forget what they did and did not do this past year-and-a-half and we will forever take seriously that the antisemtism in both parties (including the antisemitic racism against the smart, capable, lovely and down-to-earth Anamie Paul that forced her out of the Greens) has been growing its toxic mould over the last 45 years.
I’m hoping to hear some sanity from Carney that will have him calls out any form of misuse of the term Zionist, Jew and makes clear that Jihaidsm must not be permitted to go unchallenged and out must be crushed by Muslim and Arabs and anywhere else people import it, dress it up as “academic freedom”, chant its genocidal antisemitic and anti”western” rhetoric or deceive a myopic perspective that seeks to undermine Israel’s right to live in peace - or defend itself against those who seek to break that peace. So far, his right-hand man, Mendocino has been good on this, Hopefully, he will continue to have the courage to speak up - and, of course, Anthony Housefather has been steadfast and a mensch in the face of heat from the Right (including some Jews who have lot all sense of decency and deferred to the divisive politics and foul attack mentality of the Right instead of uniting as Jews - even with arguments and respectful debate.) In my mind, those right-wing Jews are as bad as those who have become the equivalent of the contemptible Inquisition Conversos, with defending jihadists as their new religious ideology.
I’ve started to write to you several times to thank you for your voice. It has meant a lot even though I’ve said little until now. Toda, Pat. Even for this secular agnostic/atheist … I regard you as a blessing.
"More substantively, the new Carney government dropped a money bomb on Gaza last week." It's much worse that that quarter-billion dollar dog-whistle to jihadism.
The Trudeau-now-Carney Liberal Government is also:
· maintaining a shameful (albeit symbolic but politically devastating) Melanie-Jolie-arms embargo on Israel as it defends itself against genuinely genocidal terror attacks by entities that are on Canada's terrorist organizations list;
· is supporting South Africa's Iran-funded, specious ICJ genocide case; and
· just hours after Carney was elected Liberal Leader and during the Trump Tariff onslaught he found time to carefully issue the following awful X statement:
"Mark Carney
@MarkJCarney
It has been more than two days that the supply of electricity to Gaza has been shut off. It must resume — essentials including food, electricity, and medical supplies should never be used as political tools.
Canada must work with our allies to stand up for international law to promote sustainable peace and security in the Middle East and to support full access to humanitarian aid for Palestinian families.
As this work continues, both parties must work towards the return of all hostages and the completion of the ceasefire agreement."
Talk about an upside-down, unambiguous and malignant taking-of-sides! International law does not oblige Israel to fuel, electrify and feed Hamas any more than the Allies were obliged to feed, electrify and fuel Nazi Germany during WWII. The ceasefire agreement has been killed by Hamas. And a token passing reference only at the very end of the Rt Hon Mark Carney's cynical statement to the Israeli hostages (who are being starved, tortured and chained underground by Hamas terrorists) does the Liberal Party no credit... other than as electoral dog-whistling to jihadist sympathizers in Canada (who outnumber Jewish voters many times over).
Thanks for this info. Melanie Joly was yukking it up with Mahmoud Abbas last year at a UN thing. March 12 2024. Holding hands with that sweet, clueless smile.
Wouldn’t a potential Trump ally like Polievre be better for Canada and its economy than someone who’s going to try to “resist” the U.S., and lose?
Regardless, given the apparent acceptance of so much of the country to the Islamist takeover, in the major population centers at least, I fully expect Canadians to make the wrong choice for themselves.
Hey Kip … so, I was out of the country for five weeks and, when I left, I thought the election would pivot on two approaches. “Stand up to Trump” or “Make nice with Trump.” By the time I returned, a week and a bit ago, the consensus was overwhelming. All parties (including Poilievre’s) are taking a “Stand up to Trump” approach. You may be correct … The question is, What do you do with a madman? Placate or confront? Time will tell, I suppose.
Yeah. I'm not a Trump supporter, and I agree the way he goes about many things is unhinged, often counterproductive and destructive. However, seeing what the Left offers here in the U.S., in Canada (you may want to check out Rebel News' footage of the recent "Al Quds Day" mobs in Toronto), and in Europe, it's become impossible for me to consider them a better option than the Republicans, and I've been a Dem for more than 40 years. If Carney wins, it appears there will be even more capitulation to Islamist insanity. Toronto and Montreal already appear to be lost causes.
Here in the U.S., the standard response from most Dems is that the Squad and their enablers are "fringe," but I'm not so sure. They may be fewer in number, for now, but the center of the Dems is old, and there is no guarantee their bulwark against the extremes in their party can hold. The socialist wing is where the energy is now and they are relentless. Take a look at the current Bernie/AOC tour. Too many Dems are doing what the Repubs did with Trump: refusing to speak out against what they know is wrong, for fear of incurring the wrath of the mob. With elections as close as they are in this country, and with polls showing AOC is the de facto leader of the Dems, there's no guarantee she can't win, or that if a more moderate Dem is nominated and wins, that he or she won't accede to the demands of the far left. To me that is as scary--maybe even more so--than Trump or Vance.
if Canadians vote Liberal because they don't like Trump all they will be doing is showing the world how stupidly sanctimonious they are; then they will be off to the US for their winter vacations. Anybody who thinks Poilievre is nothing but an attack dog has been fast asleep for the past five years. From Covid to Israel to housing to oil, Mr. Poilievre has been the truest and staunchest Canadian political leader championing Canadians against an incompetent, lying, antisemitic government. We shall see what the true north strong and free does and draw conclusions.
Yes, reasonable can absolutely disagree on which party offers the best policies for the nation. But I maintain that systematically abandoning a party, in particular the historically dominant party, because it harbours some anti-semites is counter-productive. I take my lessons from Hannah Arendt, who said the only rights are political rights, and minorities in particular need to organize and to speak up. This is, of course, what the Palestinians in the country and their admirers are doing, and I can’t reproach them for this, if I can for their values. The idea of leaving the Liberal party en masse strikes me as suicidal. What would have happened in Britain if Jews had not been willing to return to Labour after the Corbynite takeover? A bad situation would surely have become worse.
Look what happened. Labour became antisemitic and antiIsrael without Corbyn but with Stammer and his Jewish wife. Jews cannot ditch their social justice mantra and their Court Jew mentality. Hannah Arendt wrote about that too.
OK, but I don’t understand your solution. All of us vote Tory, even though we’re social democrats? We all join Chabad and engage in proselysation? If your main goal is to campaign for the Tories or talk up PP’s support for Israel or his policy objectives I totally respect that, but for Jewish futures in the diaspora, for support for Israel and for Jewish dignity and strength I think we need a more universal approach - which is one reason I follow Pat, the most hard-ass Jewish goy around.
“hard-ass Jewish goy” hahaha. Me likey. And I totally agree with David — more with every opinion poll showing the Liberals headed for victory (I know. John Turner. Kim Campbell. Things can turn on a dime). But whoever wins the election, Jews and allies need to agitate to make support for Israel and oppo to antisemitism universal values respected by EVERY party. I can understand why people say that right now Jews and their allies should vote Conservative. They have been unequivocal on antisemitism and support for Israel. So partisanship on that front is understandable. But the day after the election, we need to get back to forcing all parties more in the direction of what is correct and just. I admit the NDP may be too far gone. I reject the idea that the Liberals are there yet. It is our responsibility to make sure they don’t get there. Obviously that is not the job of dyed-in-the-wool Conservatives. But people who lean Liberal should be taking more prominent roles in that party and guiding it away from the precipice.
100% . But seriously, comparing the inestimably light-weight John Turner to Mark Carney is like comparing Kim Campbell to Stephen Harper - superficial electoral coincidences aside, just doesn’t compute.
John Turner was considered the white knight who would save the Liberals. Only in retrospect would anyone consider him a lightweight. From the time he quit Trudeau’s cabinet until he stumbled in the 84 campaign, he was considered the Liberals’ dream saviour.
I'll be voting Conservative for the first time ever. My friends who were recently Green and NDP are now Liberals all of a sudden. Anyone but Poilievre they say.
I'm hoping their habit of picking the losing side based on ideology and not reality will once again bear fruit in a crushing loss for Carney.
And I used to loathe Harper. The Omnibus Bill etc etc.
All Conservatives earned my scorn. But Conservatives are the only ones not tossing on keffiyahs and pimping jihad.
As someone who has voted Liberal all my life, October 7th was a wake up call. Like the proverbial frog in a pot of boiling water, I was completely caught off guard by the complete absence of moral clarity and the pandering to antisemitic jihadi terror supporters coming from the Liberal camp. It is clear to me now that the Liberals are the party of Neo-Marxists, and the Conservatives are the party of classic liberal values and ideals that I have always held dear. As a Jew, a Zionist, and as someone who values meritocracy and individual rights and freedoms, for the first time in my life, I will be voting Conservative.
Great article, thanks. As a South African Jew with keen interest in israel, the diaspora & geo politics, I really appreciate the clear, articulate insights. As well as schadenfreude… Hoping the liberals get caned.
2) Most of my family is still in Canada. They had pretty much washed their hands of the Liberal Party under Justin Trudeau, almost entirely because of his party's overt anti-Israel posture, bolstered by a NDP which is almost pathologically anti-Israel. However, the Orange Asscactus' attacks on Canada has flipped the game board over, and they are probably now going to vote Liberal because they think that Carney will be far more likely to stand up to Trump than would Poilievre. So, despite the fact that Carney will almost certainly be at least as anti-Israel as Trudeau (from what I've read and seen), he is probably going to get their vote. And, if the early indications are accurate, he may win a fairly large majority.
I am not particularly « ideological » - more of a pragmatic approach to politics. It is for this reason I identify as a Liberal. I very much appreciate the Conservative’s position on Israel, and a couple of other things. I wish I could say belief in a strong military - they let the military down, however, just as much as the Liberals did. But in terms of the health of the country, of my family’s well being overall there is no contest. Poilièvre is above all an effective attack dog in the House, and little else. The Conversative produce weak and ineffective cabinets. Harper introduced omnibus bills, he refused to meet with the premiers, he refused to hold press conferences. Poilièvre has no ideas for governance. It is necessary to also fight against pro-jihadist ideologies in the Liberal party - I don’t wish to passively see it go the way of the NDP. Many prominent Canadian Jews are members of the party, and carry some weight still. I would remind everyone that Bob Rae left the NDP and joined the Liberals because he judged they had become the party of anti-semitism.
Pat, this is a great piece. I am a Jewish Canadian voter and undecided (for now) in this election. You are right to say that Jews migrated to the Conservatives, but I would add a nuance. While the word Jew encompasses more than a religious designation, the migration was more associated with Orthodox and Conservative Jews than it was with Reform, Reconstructionist, and unaffiliated Jews.
The question of which Party is best for Israel has not really been in doubt for the past 20 years, especially with Arabist Melanie Joly as Foreign Minister. But Canadian Jews are not one-issue voters and we need to think about which Government will be best for Canada overall.
