Our own prime minister, Mark Carney, chose to celebrate Eid yesterday with the Muslim Association of Canada, that has been tied to the Muslim Brotherhood. It purports to be moderate but follows the teaching of Hassan al Banna- founder of the Muslim Brotherhood. They regularly invite notoriously homophobic and antisemitic imams to speak at their conferences. I’d say it was poor vetting but Carney seemed very comfortable with the keffiyeh clad crowd who talked about the genocide in Gaza in their introduction of him. I wrote about it today.
This red-green/left-Islamist alliance has been with us for quite some time. Quite a few people have written about it, but that’s a good thing because there are still people who haven’t noticed how far it has gone or how bizarre such an alliance is. That’s why it needs a lot of explaining. Queers for Palestine sound psychotic, and people need to understand how so many in our universities have climbed on board.
But what hasn’t been written about very much is how these radical movements have been led mosty by women. This was true with the BLM movement, and it’s true with the pro-Hamas/kill the Jews movement. A school like Barnard is overwhelmingly pro-Hamas. Those arrested in the assault on the Columbia library were mostly women. This is true everywhere we look. I will link below to an article written by a Barnard graduate who experienced this back in 2015. Of course, this dates back to even before 9/11. We have the curious phenomenon of both the 9/11 Islamic attack and the October 7 attack leading to more support in the West for radical Islam rather than less support. Muslims became a protected class in the West while the war on the Jews gained acceptance. It’s clear we have very sick universities, and women leading these movements must have at least something to do with the fact that about 60% of our university students are women. For some reason, they seem more susceptible to this indoctrination.

Our politicians could certainly benefit from better Middle East advisors—but what concerns me far more are the domestic policies. There is a persistent refusal to acknowledge the presence of extreme views within certain religious minority communities. Immigration vetting remains inadequate, with little apparent interest in assessing whether prospective newcomers share Canadian values or hold views on extremist ideologies that are incompatible with them.
Equally troubling is the uncritical support given to organizations and individuals who claim to represent the mainstream, but in practice lead aggressive efforts to silence opposing speech and shut down historical interpretations they find inconvenient. The NDP and Greens appear to have been fully captured by these forces, and the Liberals are dangerously close to following suit. It’s a troubling trajectory.

I have argued with several of them (in one case, I made the mistake of asking two Jews why they were posting about and attending anti-Trump marches but not going to the pro-Israel marches). One told me that anti-semitism has always been around so nothing new is happening, I am "stubborn", and he stands with the suffering people of Palestine, as do the crowds protesting in Israel. His daughter told me that she envisages a one-state solution, where Jews are a protected minority!!!!!! These are wealthy suburbans who have lived sheltered lives surrounded by other Jews and have never faced anti-semitism. All their news comes from NPR and NYT. Why don't more people speak up against the sinister alliance you call out here?
Some can’t see it because they are ignorant of history, and because their compassion has been weaponized against them as well as against the liberal/progressive ideals they claim to champion.
Others, well trained to equate all criticism of communism with McCarthyite extremism, would rather be dead than falsely denounced as reds-under-the-bed hysterics and paranoids (though many of the likely denouncers are the people who have been chanting "Russia, Russia, Russia" since 2016).
I was lucky to grow up next door to refugees from Communist-era Hungary. I got an earful.
