There is at this moment a crazy woman who has been parading around West Hollywood, California with signs stating that Jews should all be bombed, raped, stolen from, etc. She has actually left an entire array of signs sitting on the street. No one has even batted an eye or attempted to remove them. Hostage posters are torn down, but “Bomb the Jews,” meh. Apparently the police finally approached her the other day because she was yelling and told her if she continued, she would be arrested for disturbing the peace. Not for threatening to annihilate Jews, but for being a public nuisance. And that was it. They just let her carry on.

I feel your frustration! Yesterday I went for what I hoped would be a pleasant walk in the shopping district around NW Portland and saw the entire area was plastered with posters for a picnic on August 3rd in support of the genocidal Palestinian movement to take over Israel and expel or kill all the Jews. The place where the picnic is to take place is a public park in a neighborhood with a high number of synagogues and a large Jewish population. If a white supremacist picnic where slogans in favor of killing Black people would be shouted and people would march around in KKK robes were planned for my neighborhood (the one with the most Black people) would they be allowed to do this? Probably, sadly, yes, Portland has a long history of support for white supremacy. We have to keep telling our representatives this is not acceptable!

Oof, yeah, the Sydney Sweeney ad hysteria is headache-inducing. Kanye can release a song called "Heil Hitler," and we're not supposed to take him seriously. There was nary a peep about it, but Sydney Sweeney in jeans, well she's the Gestapo. Had Zendaya been the model with the exact same "genes" joke, I think it would have been taken exactly as it was intended -- "Zendaya has great genes" = Zendaya is beautiful. It's all too exhausting.

I think hate crime is different in the US than in Canada. In the US, the taking on of "hate crime" just adds possible jail time to the already charged felony. We do not have simple "hate crimes."

The man in this story would not have been charged with anything in the US. Simply saying that he wanted to blow up synagogues and kill Jews is protected under the First Amendment. Now if reported he might go on some kind of watch list that exists but nothing would be done unless it can be proved that he took actual steps to bomb a synagogue.

But you are correct in saying that if someone is charged with a hate crime or more likely a civil rights violation, there is no educational portion of the sentence. The most some people do is visit the Holocaust museum which really doesnt do anything in my opinion.

Yes, the legal responses vary greatly by jurisdiciton. But, again, as you say, little is done in any place to address the larger issues.

Your experience is mine too. In many cases the court ordered visit to the Holocaust museum feels like a sop to the Jewish community rather than an aid to rehabilitation. I doubt the people who lack empathy towards Jews are suddenly going to have an epiphany. Perhaps meeting live Jews and finding no horns etc is a way to establish a connection.

honestly I dont really know what the answer is. I figured those that are antisemites would take pleasure in the holocaust museum not be appalled by it.

The interesting thing about antisemitism is that it exists in societies with no Jews. So you may be right that the person should be introduced to actual Jews.

Those people will never learn. You'd have thought they would have learned something after WW2, but evidently not so! Sadly I don't think it is a lack of empathy, but a visceral hatred of the Jews.

Here's one I wrote today about a totally different subject I thought you might find interesting:

It seems to me that "hate crimes" and that phrase are nothing other than words. Typically, as you have stated, nothing really gets done and the perpetrators never learn a thing.

You’re right, of course. Unfortunately, the indoctrination of hate is deeply engrained. It’s being taught to Muslims from a very young age and has been for generations, so it would take generations of re-education to remedy, if possible at all. You’re right, though, that any sort of remediation is better than the useless detention he was given. If only he could be made to read all of your posts. Thanks again for caring enough to counter the hate.

Good suggestions. I wonder, though. I’ve often thought of sending educational videos to Israel-haters, some of them Jews, unfortunately. But I know they won’t watch them and will dismiss them as propaganda. Much like Greta Thunberg refusing to watch Hamas’ footage of Oct 7. https://substack.com/home/post/p-167928604

Over and over studies show that people who regularly interact with others in groups that their own group often has biases against tend to be less biased. Any sort of familiarity lessens mindless hate. So I really like your idea. And I think it would work well. Maybe give these racists probation if they agree to attend a series of workshops run by Jews about Jewish beliefs and history. In the USA people often get choices like this: go to jail for a month or do anger management classes, go to traffic school or pay a $800 ticket. We need to do the same with racism/antisemitism

I volunteer in the Restorative Justice space. This is the second time in just the last week or so when I have seen these kinds of questions posed. The first was around the hockey players acquittal. Sometimes the legal system is so focused on the letter of the law rather than the actual impact this has on the victims. In the case of the hockey players, it was the young woman who had the courage to come forward, in this case the victims are the Jewish community. Not just in Toronto but everywhere. What if we had the ability to bring this perpetrator into a circle of members of the Jewish community. Require him to consider the impact his threats have and also have him connect with Jewish people who are willing to demonstrate for him that we literally do not have horns. In other words we are not the perpetrators of evil so many have decided we are. Restorative Just ice is an effective was to bring people into understanding and compassion, rather than perpetuating the divide.

Can you clarify why the article on Sydney Sweeney?

This is from a 2022 study of restorative justice outcomes. The study does suggest that there is not a lot of data available for some aspects of the process and outcomes. But it did suggest that the data to support these outcomes is sound.

3.4 Summary of Findings

In general, empirical research into restorative justice is arguably still in its infancy. Numerous questions remain unanswered. There are several issues, however, that do appear to be resolved.

Victims who experience a restorative justice program express high levels of satisfaction with the process and the outcomes. Victims also believe that the process is fair. There are strong indications that victims are much less satisfied within the traditional court system. In addition, victims’ satisfaction level appears to be related to the fulfilment of restitution agreements.

Offenders also express high levels of satisfaction with restorative justice programming and perceive the process to be fair. In addition, research suggests that offenders processed by the traditional system are less satisfied. There is evidence, though, that the severity of the restitution agreement is closely related to an offenders’ satisfaction level. The harsher the restitution, the more likely an offender will express dissatisfaction with the program.

Most restorative justice program participants have a high level of success in negotiating restitution agreements. There is also an indication that a high proportion of offenders referred to restorative justice programs follow through on their agreements and are more likely to comply than are offenders with court-ordered restitution.

I hope he reads your blog during his 60 days, but he likely won't. Any predictions about the person who wrote "feed me" on the Holocaust memorial? Will he be fed jail food--and for how long? I believe he has already claimed through his lawyer that his crime was motivated by compassion. It will not surprise me if mental health will soon also be invoked as an excuse for antisemitism--anything except for humbly acknowledging that one needs help for dealing with the addictive pleasure of antisemitism.

I do know that it has grown tremendously as "woke" has grown.

What I meant is that I wonder if the person who vandalized the war museum will invoke mental health to claim that his judgement was impaired and to ask for a more lenient sentence.
