It truly boggles the mind that these so-called leaders care not one bit for the Jews living in their countries. Canada especially should hang its head in shame at being dubbed “the champion of antisemitism” by the Israeli Diaspora Ministry. As you say, these statements serve to embolden the haters and endanger Jews everywhere.
It is no coincidence that on the same day of the statement, Hamas rejected Israel’s latest proposal for a hostage deal. This misguided position is also putting the hostages’ lives at risk.
Meanwhile, Canada apparently wants in on America’s Golden Dome, knowing full well that it’s modelled after Israel’s Iron Dome. Israel is not allowed to defend itself against genocidal maniacs, but Canada has no problem exploiting their defence innovation. The hypocrisy is breathtaking!
It may also be no coincidence that on the following day, Iran is publicly asking Canada to remove sanctions and restore diplomatic relations between these two countries that have been in place since 2012 and never mind about the more than 80 Iranian-Canadian citizens and permanent residents killed when the IRGC shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet taking off from Tehran Airport in January 2020. It seems unlikely to me that our government would ignore the surviving family members and other Iranian - Canadian victims of the Khomeinist regime, but this remains to be seen.
Great analysis Pat. It is exactly this phenomenon where mainstream politicians take an anti-Israel position which is then taken as a signal by the haters and street protestors to step up the rhetoric and violence.
And others are at it too. PM Sanchez of Spain raised the temperature this week by questioning the voting at Eurovision which saw Israel come 2nd, like this is one of his priorities. In The Netherlands the mayor of Amsterdam has waded into this as well - a foreign policy and thus not her domain - and received endless media coverage for it. It feels like a well-coordinated campaign of Israel and Jew hate.
Not sure where to start with issues you've raised Pat, but starting with the easiest one: for the "correct thinking" left, it's open season on Jews because in the words of crank left Jackie Walker who got kicked out of Labour during Corbyn's leadership, "it's only racist if you're punching down".
Next issue - why only pressure on Israel and not Hamas? Well, maybe a mix of the racism of low expectations, concerns about re-election (Labour did absolutely dismally in the May 1 council elections and there's a lot of general dissatisfaction with Starmer's government, Macron also hanging onto power by a thread and Carney's government also in power on a slim minority) and lastly the misconstruing of international humanitarian law as to obligate Israel to provide Gazans with the necessities of life, as former Canadian ambassador to Israel, Jon Allen, is claiming in the pages of the Toronto Star and over the CBC's airway, when according to others including Reichman University's Shany Mor and Lewi Stone say that this obligation is lifted when it is proven that the enemy is commandeering the aid.
All of this being said, the Israeli government's plan to intensify pressure on Hamas to release the remaining hostages and surrender, and to also transition the delivery of humanitarian aid away from UNRWA's and Hamas's clutches to a joint IDF - American NGO operation that is supposed to be fully operational in June, is: which genius or geniuses failed to foresee the very high probability that the pro-Hamas PR machine would ramp up in a matter of weeks, as it has, with the IPC, who screwed up with their previous famine alert warning, providing the fodder for a senior UN official to misconstrue the predicted death of infants as imminent and not a projection for the next 12 month period, should conditions in Gaza remain unchanged.
As long as they are not providing military assistance to Israel, what business is it of these countries what Israel does, since they are clearly respecting the rules of war and are NOT committing a genocide.
A question for any Jews reading this. What is the best thing I can do to support you and Israel? Speak up? Contribute to campaigns like Stand With Us? Wear a badge? I feel utterly clueless at the moment in this regard. Thank you.
Pat, agree with your points, except that out Liberal Party is "middle-of-the-road". As I shared with you in an earlier commentary, I think the Liberal Party (at least under previous leadership) has jerked way to the left. The leader has changed, but I see no evidence that the party has. I wait and hope that Carney will bring the party back to the centre, but so far I have not seen anything. The statement on Gaza seems to entrench me further in my view.
Enough with these essays that pretend that there's anything close to an even partisan split with regard to identity politics. The disparity is massive, and you deserve the egg on your face that you now have for publishing this hours before the shooting of Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky.
The emerging “red-fascist-green alliance” converges at the nexus of Jew hatred.
The psychological need for the Jewish scapegoat has no boundaries.

I’ve long said that the one thing on which the far left and the far right agree is that they both loathe Jews.

They don’t want Hamas to think they’re Islamophobic.

These betrayer governments cover the entire spectrum from far-left to center-left, so of course the right is equally implicated.

Not sure I follow your logic.
